A Genji-e piece. It depicts a conversation between Ashikaga Mitsūji, the main character who is shown with his reflection in a mirror, and a young Murasaki who is beside him. Ashikaga Mitsūji is reminiscing about and painting a picture of Inabune (this novel’s version of the Safflower Princess from the Tale of Genji), whom Mitsūji promised to secretly meet with. Murasaki is watching while he paints. In the original novel’s illustration, there was no space to depict the inside and outside of the mansion as the space was used for text, but this piece is able to show this. A bonseki with a mountain-shaped stone on a lacquerware tray is displayed in the writing alcove by the window.
