This is a Genji-e based on vol.26 of Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji. It depicts a meeting between Ashikaga Mutsūji, this novel’s version of Hikaru Genji from Genji Monogatari, who is setting in the center room, and a girl (on the bottom left) who will enter into his service through the introduction of the maid on the right. As is also depicted in the illustrations in the novel, there is a large basin with water inside of it placed in the space between the room that the characters are in and the room shown to the right. A stone and a Japanese sweet flag have been decorated into this basin.
