This picture portrays a woman who is preparing afternoon tea during a break from agricultural work. She carries a teapot in her right hand and a small tray containing stacked cups, a small bowl of pickled vegetables and toothpicks in her left hand. The insert at the top right portrays a “hiemaki,” a type of bonsai created by planting hie (millet) seeds on a damp piece of cotton in a basin to resemble a green rice paddock when the millet sprouts. The poem says “Shiji o wasureru inaka no kurashi,” which means “if you live in the countryside, you will be so busy that you will forget what time of the day it is.”
