This print depicts a woman fishing for basket clams in a water basin using a single primrose flower that she has pulled out of a pot. It is thought that this print represents a young woman’s unrequited love, as on the upper part of the print is a poem about love written by Ariwara no Narihira, one of the Rokkasen (the six poet immortals), along with text written by the author Ryūkatei Tanekazu. The poem reads: “Is that not the moon?/ And is the spring not the spring/ Of a year ago?/ This body of mine alone/ Remains as it was before” (poem translation by Donald Keene).
