A Noh play called Hachi no ki (Potted Plants) was adapted into kabuki plays and jōruri ballad dramas during the Edo Period. One of these is called Onna Hachi no ki (Female Version of the “Potted Plants” Story), in which Tsuneyo Sano, the leading character of the original, was replaced by his wife Shirotae. This piece depicts a scene where Shirotae is pruning a potted plant.
