This painting is based on the fourth section of a kabuki play named Kana dehon Chūshingura (Treasury of Loyal Retainers), which itself took the historical event known as the the Akō vendetta and placed it in the Muromachi period of Japan. This scene here depicts the wife of Asano Takumi no Kami and her chamber maids arranging a double flowered cherry flower into a pot in order to console him as he is under house arrest for slashing at Kira Kōzukenosuke. An apricot and a cherry tree that have been potted and placed in the garden are in full bloom.
