Sado red stones such as these are found on Sado Island, in Niigata Prefecture. It is a type of suiseki known as a kuzuya-ishi, meaning thatched-hut stones. As the name suggests, they are supposed to resemble houses with thatched rooves and bring to mind an idyllic rural scene.
