This type of stone is an example of one of the Seven Kamo Stones, which are stones with a connection to the Kamo River water system. It is called an itokake-ishi (thread stone) because of the thread-like pattern on its surface. Through admiring the complex shapes and patterns present in this stone, one can imagine a vivid scene of countless tangling roots from ancient trees covering a mountainside. Due to this appearance, it was given the name Senkyō, which is said to be a place where hermits would go in order to escape from the secular world.
