Stones from the Saiji River are hard and often have an elegant bluish-black color. As such, the Saiji River is famous as a treasure trove of brilliant stones. Suiseki stones with a flat verticle surface like this piece are often called doha-ishi (meaning slope stone). Doha-ishi often give grand vistas, such as in this piece where one can see a tranquil high plain sprawling out from a precipitous mountain.
