This piece is an ishitsuki-bonsai, or a rock-grown bonsai, created by Tomio Yamada, the 4th generation owner of Seiko-en in Omiya Bonsai Village. It was made by planting a Japanese white pine into a unique, circular stone and letting it take root. Tomio Yamada was captivated by the rugged appearance of this stone and originally planted an Ezo pine into it around 50 years ago. It was later remade with this Japanese white pine as its base along with a Japanese quince and Japanese maple tree, creating a combination of both stillness and motion within the same piece.
