The Japanese name of Kamatsuka, originates from how its wood was used for the handle of a scythe due to its sturdiness. It is also known by the name ushi-koroshi, or “cow-killer”, because it is said that the wood of this tree was also used in making cattle nose rings. From its branches which lean to the left out of its thick trunk, clusters of small white flowers bloom in May. These later give way to refreshing crimson fruit in autumn.
