The rising trunk leads to dead branches that have become shari (literally meaning “Buddha’s bones”), while the living auburn parts of the trunk wrapping their way up the branch. Even though much of the tree has died, the tree is flush with leaves, a point of viewing this piece that represents the distinctive life force of shimpaku.
