This tree is named ichii in Japanese, which literally translates to “highest position”. It is thought that this name comes from how this tree was used to make the ritual baton that high ranking government officials used. The white shari that makes up the majority of the trunk and the ten-jin which bursts out from its canopy draw the viewers attention. This piece makes all who gaze upon it ponder on the age and the harsh conditions that it would have lived in nature.
