Even among imposing chokkan, or formal upright, bonsai, this piece stands out because of the way its trunk tappers as it rises from the base, giving the viewer the impression of looking up at a tall, full-sized tree. To express the impact of the trunk the bonsai was tailored to have a thick trunk growing from the bottom right, strengthening the soaring image of the tree.
