This juniper bonsai’s strongly bending trunk, a large part of which has become shari, dead white wood, looks as if it is a wave ready to break, giving the piece a powerful impact on the viewer. This piece is titled Hokusai because of it reminds us of the ukiyoe woodblock prints, 36 Views of Mount Fuji, by famed Edo period ukiyoe artist Katsushika Hosukai.
