樹形：直幹／推定樹齢：70年
掛幅：秋吉則州「平常心是道」 E-078 ／脇床：タンチョウソウ　
そびえ立つ杉の大木の偉容（いよう）を凝縮したかのような樹形は、盆栽ならではの造形美を典型的に示している。左右交互に仕立てられた枝ぶりが、均整のとれた姿かたちを強調し、清々（すがすが）しい印象を生みだしている。

With the appearance of a lofty cedar condensed into a single pot, this piece is a perfect example of the true beauty that can be found in a bonsai’s form. This tree’s branches have been tailored to grow out right and left alternately, forming a punctuated symmetry that leaves the viewer feeling at ease.

枝垂桜
枝垂れの名の通り、下方に垂れる枝模様が見どころの桜の一品種。滝の如く流れ落ちる枝先に小振りの花が散りばめられる様は、品の良い色香を醸し出している。花弁は、薄紅色から次第に濃い桃色となり、咲き終わりを迎える。

Weeping Cherry
As its name suggests, this type of cherry is notable for the way that its branches droop down. These branches that flow down like a waterfall hold a number of small flowers on their tips. A pleasant fragrance is released from these colored flowers. The petals will become darker in color, going from a light pink to a darker pink, and then they will fall.

掛軸：関牧翁「今日無事」 E-096
鉢の表土を覆い尽くすかのように発達した「盤根」から、やわらかな模様を描いて立ち上がる、白肌も上品な幹姿の一作。品種名「獅子頭」とは、葉のねじれた形状が、唐獅子の巻毛を想わせることから付けられている。

This Japanese maple bonsai boasts an elegant white skinned trunk drawn with gentle curves rising from the visible rock-like root, known as bankon. This variety of Japanese maple is called shishigashira, which is derived from how the tree’s leaves spread out to look like the mane of a shishi, a Chinese guardian lion.

西洋鎌柄
添え：マンネングサ
バラ科アロニア属の落葉低木。日本の鎌柄（かまつか）に似ていることから、「セイヨウカマツカ」と呼ばれる。５月頃に可憐な白い花を咲かせ、秋に赤い実を結ぶ。波打つ枝先には、新芽とともに小さな穂状の蕾（つぼみ）が顔をのぞかせている。

Red Chokeberry
Companion Piece: Mannengusa, Stonecrop, Sedum
The red chokeberry is a type of deciduous shrub in the rose family. In Japan, it is often referred to as the “Western kamatsuka”, as it resembles the kamatsuka (Pourthiaea villosa), a plant native to Japan. It blooms with white sweet flowers around May and bears red fruit in autumn. It has numerous green buds and small flowers growing at the tips of its waving branches.

粉彩花卉文丸鉢　B-030・031
作陶地：不詳（中国）／年代：20世紀
粉彩とは、陶磁器の表面に不透明な上絵具で文様を描く技法のこと。本作では、黄色い地の唐草文様の中に三つの丸窓を配し、蓮と菊、そして牡丹の意匠をあらわしている。いずれの花にも蝶々が飛び交い、春秋の長閑な日和をイメージさせる。

Round Bonsai Pot with Famille Rose Flower Design
Location: Unknown (China) ／ Estimated Date: 20th c.
Famille rose, or fencai, refer to a type of ceramic which have been painted and glossed in a particular way with opaque designs. In this piece, three circular windows have been depicted over the yellow arabesque base. In each window, a lotus, chrysanthemum and a tree peony are depicted respectively. Many butterflies are shown flying between these flowers, giving the piece a tranquil spring and autumn feel.

名品真柏の採取地として知られ、細かく小さな葉性を特徴とする、新潟県糸魚川市産とみられる真柏盆栽。根元から板状になって絡み合い、ねじれ曲がるシャリの躍動感や、ジンと化した細かな枝、糸魚川真柏ならではの葉の質感が本作品の見どころ。

Style: Han-kengai (Semi Cascade) ／ Estimated Age: 150 Years
Companion Piece: Yuki-yanagi, Thunberg Spirea, Spiraea thunbergii
Due to the delicate appearance of the needles, this juniper bonsai appears to have been collected from Itoigawa City in Niigata Prefecture, home to many famous juniper bonsai. What makes this piece special are the white trunk that twists and turns as it rises from the root base, the fine branches that have become jin, and finally, the unique texture of the leaves that you find on Itoigawa junipers.

瀬田川石　銘春暁　C-008
採石地：滋賀県瀬田川流域
本石は、細やかな梨地の肌に、なだらかな起伏を有する形状を特徴としている。「春暁」と言えば、唐代の漢詩「春眠暁を覚えず」で知られている。春の夢の如き、柔らかな朝靄(あさもや)につつまれた丘陵(きゅうりょう)を連想し、この銘がつけられたのであろう。

Setagawa-ishi named Shungyō
Hill Suiseki-stone
Collected Area: Seta River, Shiga Pref.
This stone, collected from the Seta River in Shiga Prefecture is prized for the gentle undulations across its grainy surface. Shungyō, the title of this piece, means the “Spring Dawn”. This is a reference to a famous Tang Chinese poem that is translated as “in spring one sleeps a sleep that knows no dawn; in spring one sleeps like a log”. This name may have been given to the piece due to its resemblance to hills glimpsed through a morning mist.

大島桜
大島桜は桜の基本野生種のひとつで、大島をはじめとする伊豆諸島に自生する大島桜の盆栽。花と葉が一緒に展開するのが特徴。白い花は大振りで、みずみずしい若葉と相まって、春らしい淡い色彩を放つ。桜としては珍しく、強い芳香があり、葉は桜餅にも用いられている。

Ōshima Cherry Tree
The Ōshima cherry is a type of wild cherry that grows on the Izu Islands, one of which is called Izu Ōshima. A feature of this tree is how the flowers and leaves grow at the same time. The large flowers contrast with the fresh green leaves, giving a faint springtime flush of color. It has a strong aroma, which is rare amongst cherry trees. As such, the leaves are used in the pink-colored rice cake called sakuramochi.

小ぶりな作ながら、鉢の上を覆うように隆起した、ふくよかな盤根が見どころの作。年間を通じて、様々な顔を見せる樹種であるが、この季節は何と言っても、芽吹きの逞しい生命力に魅せられる。

Despite being a smaller piece, this bonsai boasts a well-rounded root formation that covers the surface of its pot. While this type of tree constantly changes throughout the year to show a wide variety of appearances, it has a unique charm at this time of year, as one can feel a powerful sense of vitality from its buds.

枝垂れの名の通り、下方に垂れる枝模様が見どころの桜の品種。滝の如く流れ落ちる枝先に純白の花が散りばめられる。蘇軾（そしょく）の七言絶句「春夜」の一節「花有清香（かゆうせいこう）」が線刻された泥鉢ともよく合い、春の宵にしばし眺めたい一鉢である。

Weeping Cherry
Companion Piece: Baika-ōren, Coptis quinquefolia
The weeping cherry is notable for the way that its branches droop down. The tips of its branches that come down burst like a waterfall bearing numerous small white flowers. It matches well with its unglazed pot, which has been carved with a line from the Chinese poem qiyan jueju, Spring Night, by poet Su Shi. This line may be translated as “bustling blossoms revel in refreshing fragrance”. This piece is best admired on a spring evening.

根元からうねるように立ち上がった幹に、白色化したシャリがからみつき、観る者を圧倒するような躍動感を生みだしている。厳しい風雪に耐えることで培（つちか）われた、真柏ならではの造型美を見せる一点。

The winding trunk, which undulates as it rises up the root to embrace the dead whitewood, or shari, expresses an overwhelming sense of movement to the viewer. As of a tree which was raised withstanding severe wind and snow, this bonsai boasts a beautiful shape only possible with Japanese juniper.

土佐水木
掛軸：不詳「元禄美人糸繰り」E-064
土佐水木はマンサク科トサミズキ属の低木で、高知県（旧国名：土佐国）のみに自生することから、この名前が付いた。釣鐘状の萼（がく）から、淡黄色の花を穂状に咲かせるところが特徴。若木の細い枝先から花をほころばせ、春の訪れを知らせてくれる。

Spike Winter-hazel

The spike winter-hazel is a shrub of the witch-hazel family. Its name in Japanese is Tosa-mizuki. It gets this name from the fact that it only grows naturally in Kōchi Prefecture, which was formally known as Tosa Province. The light yellow flowers that bloom from its bell-shaped sepal set this bonsai apart. The flowers that bud out from the tips of this plant’s fine branches herald the vernal season.

清らかで奥深い趣を意味する「清玄」という品種名が付けられた本種の特徴は、春に鮮やかな紅色の若葉を芽吹くことにある。若葉は夏にかけていったん青葉にかわり、秋には再びみごとな紅葉に染まる。

This variety of maple is called seigen, meaning "pure and deep". It is known for the bright crimson foliage that bud in the spring. These leaves then change into green all at once in the summer and finally become soaked in crimson again in the autumn.

小葉の髄菜
本種は、比較的暖かい地域の山中に自生する落葉低木である。この時季は、豊かな空間を形作りながら広がる枝配りと、赤く染まった繊細な枝先が見どころ。５月になると、愛らしい白い花を穂状につける。秋の紅葉も美しく、四季を通じて楽しめる樹種である。

Virginia Willow
The Virginia willow is a deciduous shrub that naturally grows in comparatively warm mountain regions. The way its branches widely spread out and the red color of its delicate branches are a must-see in this season. Around May, many pretty white flowers bloom in ears on its thin branches. In autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful red, making this a piece that can be enjoyed all year round.

色絵唐子文六角鉢　B-212
窯名：不明／年代：江戸～明治時代
長崎県の平戸焼とする見方もある。胴の各面には、軍配や銅鑼を携えた童子の愛らしい姿が描かれる。こうした異国風のいでたちをした「唐子」が楽し気に遊ぶ姿は、太平の世を象徴する吉祥文様とされた。六角形の形状を活かし、色数の限られた上絵具ですっきりと描かれている。

Hexagonal Bonsai Pot with Karako Design
Pottery : Unkown　／ Estimated Year: Edo～Meiji Periods
It is thought that this pot could be a piece of hirado ware, a type of pottery produced in Nagasaki Prefecture. Pictures of cute children holding gongs and war fans are depicted on each of the faces. This type of design with karako, children in exotic Chinese clothing, could be said to be auspicious and to represent peace and harmony. All six sides are used to their fullest while only using limited color.

安定感のあるどっしりとした根元と、歳月を重ねた荒々しい樹皮が、黒松ならではの力強い生命力や、大樹の風格を感じさせる。バランスよく配された枝が、端正な趣（おもむき）をかたちづくる一点。

The imposing trunk base, with its feeling of stability, and the bark that has been harshly tempered over many years, make this Japanese black pine appear resilient and enormous. The balance in the branch placement on this piece helps to create its graceful shape.

採石地: 滋賀県瀬田川流域
本品が採取された滋賀県の瀬田川流域は、名石の産地として知られている。黒い石の上面に灰白色の浅い層がところどころに浮かび上がり、「武蔵野」の銘の通り、なだらかな起伏を帯びてどこまでも広がりゆく、原野の景観をかたち作っている。

The Seta River in Shiga Prefecture, where this stone was taken from, is famous for the quality stones found there. Shallow grey sections rise up throughout the black rocky surface of this stone. It evokes the scene of an expansive field that spreads out into the horizon with gentle slopes.

椿（永楽） A-132
樹形：双幹／推定樹齢50年
黒みを帯びた渋い紅色の花が特徴の品種名「永楽」の盆栽。花期は3月上旬から中旬で、花弁があまり開かない「筒咲き」も特徴のひとつ。本作は、挿し木から40年以上にわたって作りこまれたもので、若木の時から曲づけられた幹模様が目を引く。ゆったりとした曲線となめらかな白い樹皮が、やさしい印象を与えている。

Japanese Camellia　(Eiraku)
Style: Sō-kan (Twin Trunk) ／ Estimated Age: 50 Years
This variety of Japanese camellia named “eiraku” is known for its dark, crimson red flowers. While these flowers will bloom from the start of March, the petals do not fully open, giving them a unique shape. In Japanese, this is known as tsutsuzaki, or “tubular flowers”. This piece has been taken care of carefully for around 40 years to create its unique twisting trunk, which captures the intrigue of the viewer. The eiraku camellia lets off a gentle aura from its relaxed curves and its smooth white trunk.

Through the passage of time parts of branches and trunks of evergreen trees can partially decay yet retain their shape. Such branches are called Jin while decayed parts of trunks are called Shari. そびえ立つ杉の大木の偉容（いよう）を凝縮したかのような樹形は、盆栽ならではの造形美を典型的に示している。左右交互に仕立てられた枝ぶりが、均整のとれた姿かたちを強調し、清々（すがすが）しい印象を生みだしている。

枝垂桜
枝垂れの名の通り、下方に垂れる枝模様が見どころの桜の一品種。滝の如く流れ落ちる枝先に小振りの花が散りばめられる様は、品の良い色香を醸し出している。花弁は、薄紅色から次第に濃い桃色となり、咲き終わりを迎える。

Weeping Cherry
As its name suggests, this type of cherry is notable for the way that its branches droop down. These branches that flow down like a waterfall hold a number of small flowers on their tips. A pleasant fragrance is released from these colored flowers. The petals will become darker in color, going from a light pink to a darker pink, and then they will fall.

鉢の表土を覆い尽くすかのように発達した「盤根」から、やわらかな模様を描いて立ち上がる、白肌も上品な幹姿の一作。品種名「獅子頭」とは、葉のねじれた形状が、唐獅子の巻毛を想わせることから付けられている。

This Japanese maple bonsai boasts an elegant white skinned trunk drawn with gentle curves rising from the visible rock-like root, known as bankon. This variety of Japanese maple is called shishigashira, which is derived from how the tree’s leaves spread out to look like the mane of a shishi, a Chinese guardian lion.

西洋鎌柄
添え：マンネングサ
バラ科アロニア属の落葉低木。日本の鎌柄（かまつか）に似ていることから、「セイヨウカマツカ」と呼ばれる。５月頃に可憐な白い花を咲かせ、秋に赤い実を結ぶ。波打つ枝先には、新芽とともに小さな穂状の蕾（つぼみ）が顔をのぞかせている。

Red Chokeberry

The red chokeberry is a type of deciduous shrub in the rose family. In Japan, it is often referred to as the “Western kamatsuka”, as it resembles the kamatsuka (Pourthiaea villosa), a plant native to Japan. It blooms with white sweet flowers around May and bears red fruit in autumn. It has numerous green buds and small flowers growing at the tips of its waving branches.

粉彩花卉文丸鉢　B-030・031
作陶地：不詳（中国）／年代：20世紀
粉彩とは、陶磁器の表面に不透明な上絵具で文様を描く技法のこと。本作では、黄色い地の唐草文様の中に三つの丸窓を配し、蓮と菊、そして牡丹の意匠をあらわしている。いずれの花にも蝶々が飛び交い、春秋の長閑な日和をイメージさせる。

Round Bonsai Pot with Famille Rose Flower Design
Location: Unknown (China) ／ Estimated Date: 20th c.
Famille rose, or fencai, refer to a type of ceramic which have been painted and glossed in a particular way with opaque designs. In this piece, three circular windows have been depicted over the yellow arabesque base. In each window, a lotus, chrysanthemum and a tree peony are depicted respectively. Many butterflies are shown flying between these flowers, giving the piece a tranquil spring and autumn feel.

名品真柏の採取地として知られ、細かく小さな葉性を特徴とする、新潟県糸魚川市産とみられる真柏盆栽。根元から板状になって絡み合い、ねじれ曲がるシャリの躍動感や、ジンと化した細かな枝、糸魚川真柏ならではの葉の質感が本作品の見どころ。

Companion Piece: Yuki-yanagi, Thunberg Spirea, Spiraea thunbergii
Due to the delicate appearance of the needles, this juniper bonsai appears to have been collected from Itoigawa City in Niigata Prefecture, home to many famous juniper bonsai. What makes this piece special are the white trunk that twists and turns as it rises from the root base, the fine branches that have become jin, and finally, the unique texture of the leaves that you find on Itoigawa junipers.

瀬田川石　銘春暁　C-008
採石地：滋賀県瀬田川流域
本石は、細やかな梨地の肌に、なだらかな起伏を有する形状を特徴としている。「春暁」と言えば、唐代の漢詩「春眠暁を覚えず」で知られている。春の夢の如き、柔らかな朝靄(あさもや)につつまれた丘陵(きゅうりょう)を連想し、この銘がつけられたのであろう。

Setagawa-ishi named Shungyō

Collected Area: Seta River, Shiga Pref.
This stone, collected from the Seta River in Shiga Prefecture is prized for the gentle undulations across its grainy surface. Shungyō, the title of this piece, means the “Spring Dawn”. This is a reference to a famous Tang Chinese poem that is translated as “in spring one sleeps a sleep that knows no dawn; in spring one sleeps like a log”. This name may have been given to the piece due to its resemblance to hills glimpsed through a morning mist.

大島桜
大島桜は桜の基本野生種のひとつで、大島をはじめとする伊豆諸島に自生する大島桜の盆栽。花と葉が一緒に展開するのが特徴。白い花は大振りで、みずみずしい若葉と相まって、春らしい淡い色彩を放つ。桜としては珍しく、強い芳香があり、葉は桜餅にも用いられている。

Ōshima Cherry Tree
The Ōshima cherry is a type of wild cherry that grows on the Izu Islands, one of which is called Izu Ōshima. A feature of this tree is how the flowers and leaves grow at the same time. The large flowers contrast with the fresh green leaves, giving a faint springtime flush of color. It has a strong aroma, which is rare amongst cherry trees. As such, the leaves are used in the pink-colored rice cake called sakuramochi.

枝垂れの名の通り、下方に垂れる枝模様が見どころの桜の品種。滝の如く流れ落ちる枝先に純白の花が散りばめられる。蘇軾（そしょく）の七言絶句「春夜」の一節「花有清香（かゆうせいこう）」が線刻された泥鉢ともよく合い、春の宵にしばし眺めたい一鉢である。

The weeping cherry is notable for the way that its branches droop down. The tips of its branches that come down burst like a waterfall bearing numerous small white flowers. It matches well with its unglazed pot, which has been carved with a line from the Chinese poem qiyan jueju, Spring Night, by poet Su Shi. This line may be translated as “bustling blossoms revel in refreshing fragrance”. This piece is best admired on a spring evening.

根元からうねるように立ち上がった幹に、白色化したシャリがからみつき、観る者を圧倒するような躍動感を生みだしている。厳しい風雪に耐えることで培（つちか）われた、真柏ならではの造型美を見せる一点。

The winding trunk, which undulates as it rises up the root to embrace the dead whitewood, or shari, expresses an overwhelming sense of movement to the viewer. As of a tree which was raised withstanding severe wind and snow, this bonsai boasts a beautiful shape only possible with Japanese juniper.

土佐水木
掛軸：不詳「元禄美人糸繰り」E-064
土佐水木はマンサク科トサミズキ属の低木で、高知県（旧国名：土佐国）のみに自生することから、この名前が付いた。釣鐘状の萼（がく）から、淡黄色の花を穂状に咲かせるところが特徴。若木の細い枝先から花をほころばせ、春の訪れを知らせてくれる。

Spike Winter-hazel

The spike winter-hazel is a shrub of the witch-hazel family. Its name in Japanese is Tosa-mizuki. It gets this name from the fact that it only grows naturally in Kōchi Prefecture, which was formally known as Tosa Province. The light yellow flowers that bloom from its bell-shaped sepal set this bonsai apart. The flowers that bud out from the tips of this plant’s fine branches herald the vernal season.

清らかで奥深い趣を意味する「清玄」という品種名が付けられた本種の特徴は、春に鮮やかな紅色の若葉を芽吹くことにある。若葉は夏にかけていったん青葉にかわり、秋には再びみごとな紅葉に染まる。

小葉の髄菜
本種は、比較的暖かい地域の山中に自生する落葉低木である。この時季は、豊かな空間を形作りながら広がる枝配りと、赤く染まった繊細な枝先が見どころ。５月になると、愛らしい白い花を穂状につける。秋の紅葉も美しく、四季を通じて楽しめる樹種である。

Virginia Willow
The Virginia willow is a deciduous shrub that naturally grows in comparatively warm mountain regions. The way its branches widely spread out and the red color of its delicate branches are a must-see in this season. Around May, many pretty white flowers bloom in ears on its thin branches. In autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful red, making this a piece that can be enjoyed all year round.

色絵唐子文六角鉢　B-212
窯名：不明／年代：江戸～明治時代
長崎県の平戸焼とする見方もある。胴の各面には、軍配や銅鑼を携えた童子の愛らしい姿が描かれる。こうした異国風のいでたちをした「唐子」が楽し気に遊ぶ姿は、太平の世を象徴する吉祥文様とされた。六角形の形状を活かし、色数の限られた上絵具ですっきりと描かれている。

Hexagonal Bonsai Pot with Karako Design

It is thought that this pot could be a piece of hirado ware, a type of pottery produced in Nagasaki Prefecture. Pictures of cute children holding gongs and war fans are depicted on each of the faces. This type of design with karako, children in exotic Chinese clothing, could be said to be auspicious and to represent peace and harmony. All six sides are used to their fullest while only using limited color.

採石地: 滋賀県瀬田川流域
本品が採取された滋賀県の瀬田川流域は、名石の産地として知られている。黒い石の上面に灰白色の浅い層がところどころに浮かび上がり、「武蔵野」の銘の通り、なだらかな起伏を帯びてどこまでも広がりゆく、原野の景観をかたち作っている。

The Seta River in Shiga Prefecture, where this stone was taken from, is famous for the quality stones found there. Shallow grey sections rise up throughout the black rocky surface of this stone. It evokes the scene of an expansive field that spreads out into the horizon with gentle slopes.

椿（永楽） A-132
樹形：双幹／推定樹齢50年
黒みを帯びた渋い紅色の花が特徴の品種名「永楽」の盆栽。花期は3月上旬から中旬で、花弁があまり開かない「筒咲き」も特徴のひとつ。本作は、挿し木から40年以上にわたって作りこまれたもので、若木の時から曲づけられた幹模様が目を引く。ゆったりとした曲線となめらかな白い樹皮が、やさしい印象を与えている。

Japanese Camellia　(Eiraku)
Style: Sō-kan (Twin Trunk) ／ Estimated Age: 50 Years
This variety of Japanese camellia named “eiraku” is known for its dark, crimson red flowers. While these flowers will bloom from the start of March, the petals do not fully open, giving them a unique shape. In Japanese, this is known as tsutsuzaki, or “tubular flowers”. This piece has been taken care of carefully for around 40 years to create its unique twisting trunk, which captures the intrigue of the viewer. The eiraku camellia lets off a gentle aura from its relaxed curves and its smooth white trunk.
